A Taiwan state-owned distillery has to call off its plan to recruit ambassadors from universities to help promote its products after the plan was accused of encouraging drinking on campuses.

Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor Inc. (KKL), a state-owned distillery in the island county of Kinmen, posted a recruitment advertising last month seeking to recruit student ambassadors from 52 universities across the country.

The job description said the ambassadors will help promote responsible drinking and familiarize their classmates with KKL products, the Taiwan News reported.

Any students pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree can apply, and those selected as ambassadors will be given free distillery tours and spirits-tasting lessons.

The ad invited criticism from parents, health professionals and lawmakers for attempting to expose university students to hard liquor.

Kaoliang (sorghum) liquor is the same as Chinese baijiu which is distilled mainly from sorghum, some are then matured in clay or porcelain containers depending on styles.

This category typically has over 50% ABV, very often closed to 60%, and gives a fiery sensation when nibbled.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Huang Kuo-shu, who described the plan as highly inappropriate, also warned that KKL may have violated the laws governing tobacco and alcohol administration.

The distillery initially responded by explaining that the plan aimed at educating students about the importance of responsible drinking, it later decided to call off the plan entirely.

It also promised to take more cautious approach in the future, and stressed that it will continue to promote sensible drinking among the young people.
