The National Wine Agency of Georgia (NWAG) recently signed an agreement with the marketing company headed by Japan’s only Master of Wine, Kenichi Ohashi, to carry out marketing and advertising activities in Japan to promote Georgian wine.
Prior to the signing of this agreement, Ohashi has already organised several wine-tasting seminars in different Japanese cities for Georgian wine.
The Japanese market for Georgian wine is small at the moment, but it’s fast-growing and has plenty of room to expand.
The number of bottles of Georgian wine exported to Japan in 2018 was 45,000, which has more than quadrupled to 200,000 bottles in 2020.
The NWAG views Japan as one of their strategic markets and will roll out more promotional activities.
Georgian wine is a late comer in the Japanese market despite having 8000 years of wine-making history. The first meaningful promotion of Georgian wine in Japan started only in 2014, when the first large-scale presentation of Georgian wine took place.
Since then various Georgian wine promotion activities have taken place, which include wine tasting events in numerous Japanese cities and participation in local exhibitions like Wine and Gourmet Japan.
A number of wine tours to Georgia have also been organised to Japanese wine professionals and media representatives.
Georgian wine has also actively participated in Japan’s wine competitions, the most recent being the SAKURA Awards.
