The Chengdu show of China's Food and Drinks Fair, dubbed Chengdu Wine and Spirits Show, opens today with the biggest ever exhibition areas, spanning 215,000 square meters.
Physical trade shows of this scale is almost non-existent around the world at the moment because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The organiser said over 4000 companies from 42 countries have participated in this year’s show which is held in Western China (Chengdu) International Expo City.
The 4000 participating companies will showcase their products during the 3-day show which will close on 9 April.
Due to China's strict quarantine measures for international travellers, both exhibitors and visitors attending the show are mostly China-based staff and personnel.
Apart from wine and spirits, the show also covers beers, non-alcoholic drinks, teas, food stuff, seasoning ingredients and food processing machines.
Last year's Chengdu fair was cancelled because of COVID-19. It was the only time since the show started in 1955 that it had been cancelled.
This year's show was originally scheduled on 25 to 27 March, the organiser had to postpone it due to a surge of COVID cases in some northern provinces ahead of Chinese New Year.
The fact that this year’s show can eventually go ahead shows that the Chinese authority is confident that they have put the coronavirus firmly under control.
