Holiday hungry Singaporeans can now have a taste of French classics at home from an exhibition of the Orient Express featuring a pop-up restaurant run by three Michelin-starred Yannick Alleno inside the replica of the legendary train's dining car.

The “Once Upon A Time On The Orient Express” exhibition, opened in mid December last year till June this year, is another opportunity for Singaporeans to feed their carvings for travel following the A380 pop-up restaurant and glamping at Changi Airport events.

Visitors to the exhibition are greeted by a facade of the Gare du Nord station in Paris from which the Orient Express would depart back in 1880s to the 1980s.

The dining car features antique silverware laid out for visitors to indulge in food prepared by the renowned French chef. High tea, brunch, lunch and dinner packages are available starting at SGD78 per person.

Alleno was not in Singapore at the time of the opening of the pop-up due to COVID travel restrictions, but he has worked with Accor’s Singapore team and Sébastien Lefort, ex chief executive of Yannick Alleno Group, to ensure quality and standards of the pop-up service.

The Michelin-starred chef said his team has put a lot of efforts in designing the “roaring twenties” menus which were inspired by the countries along the route of the Orient Express including Italy, Venice and Iran, but always based on French cuisine concept.

A 7-course dinner menu for Valentines celebration in February will cost SGD498 per person, including a glass of Moët & Chandon Brut Impérial. Additional choice of 4 wines flight costs SGD165 per person, 6 wine pairing at SGD 228 per person or 6 premium wine pairing at SGD 338 per person.

Inside the narrow carriages, antique lamps, champagne bottles, cigarette butts, matches, ashtrays, crumpled newspapers and books were spread out on the tables. Apparel such as hats and jackets worn by famous past passengers, such as French singer Josephine Baker and writer Agatha Christie, were left on the seats. Train whistles could be heard in the background to enhance the sensory experience.

Visitors will then enter the open exhibition space with more than 300 pieces of precious items and documents from that era, including uniforms, a sleeping car, Louis Vuitton luggage and priceless porcelain.

“We hope to take Singaporeans on a journey into the myth of the Orient Express. This is a true escape for the senses,” says Guillaume de Saint Lager, vice president and executive director of Orient Express.

Singapore is the first destination outside of France to have staged the Orient Express exhibition, it is on at Gardens by the Bay until June, tickets starting at SGD25 per person.
