French exhibition organiser Vinexpo has announced that it will debut Vinexpo India later this year, to help global producers to tap the fast growing consumer market in the world’s second most populous country.
The first edition of Vinexpo India is scheduled to take place in New Delhi from 9th to 11th December this year in partnership with Indian exhibition organiser Sial.
Given that India is the world’s biggest spirits market by volume, Vinexpo India will cover both wine and spirits, and will have between 20 to 30 international producers alongside domestic manufacturers.
There will be a series of masterclasses and tastings, in line with the format of Vinexpo’s other events.
“India is already very strong in spirits, but this show will likely be more about wine, but with some spirits as well,” said Vinexpo CEO Rodolphe Lameyse.
India’s wine industry is also growing, its local wine production is believed to be comparable to that of China.
It is also home to the world’s biggest youth population, with over 800 million people under the age of 35, as well as a growing middle class population.
According to a 2018 Wine Intelligence report, the India market was like the Chinese market some 15 years ago. The report said that the Indian wine industry posted a compound annual growth of over 14 percent between 2010 and 2017.
Most of India’s vineyards can be found in the southern Maharashtra and Karnataka states. Nashik in Maharashtra is India’s most important wine region where vines are planted on high altitude to avoid India’s scorching heat.
The most common grape varieties planted are Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, and Shiraz.
