Chinese media reports said Australian wine companies including Treasury Wine Estates (TWE) and Accolade Wines will ship bulk wines to China and have them bottled there as a strategy to get round the punitive tariffs imposed on them.

Reports said these plans have been approved by authorities in China and some bulk wines have already arrived in China to be ready for the Chengdu Wine Fair next month.

It is said that TWE will use bottling facilities in Penglai in Shangdong province, and the brands to be bottled there include Penfolds, Penfolds Max, Rawson retreat and Blossom Hill.

Reports also said Accolade Wines will also ship bulk wines to China and bottle their William Hardys and Hardys Stamp brands in bottling facilities in shanghai.

It is said that the bottling capacity of Accolade’s bulk wine in China can reach 1 million bottles by May, and capacity for the whole is estimated at 2.5 million bottles.

These reports have not been confirmed by both TWE and Accolade Wines.

China's Ministry of Commerce issued its final verdicts for its anti-dumping and anti-subsidies investigations on Australian wines last Friday.

Australian wine importers will have to pay punitive tariffs ranging from 116.2% to 218.4% from 28 March for five years.

These tariffs only affect bottled wines, they do not apply on bulk wines.
