Japanese drinks producers will display alcoholic content in grams as well as ABV in response to the government's plan to tackle the problems of alcohol addiction and alcohol related health issues.

The Japanese government is set to ask the liquor industry to display how much alcohol in grams is in their products, on top of the ABV alcohol percentage shown on labels.

Producers are currently only required to display the ABV, but Japan's Ministry of Health has set the reference standard for daily alcohol intake for men at 40 grams and for women at 20 grams.

Japan's health care sector has pointed out that the current method of displaying ABV alone makes it difficult for consumers to understand exactly how much alcohol they are consuming.

The request is part of the government's plan to prevent alcohol addictions and other adverse effects of drinking. The government will obtain Cabinet approval for the move in the near future.

Recently a drink called Chuhai or Shochu Highball becomes very popular in Japan. With a typical ABV of around 10%, the drink has caused concern that consumers are taking in a large amount of alcohol with little awareness.

Some major alcoholic drinks producers in Japan have already drawn up plans to display alcohol in grams.

Suntory Holdings plans to show alcohol in grams for its beers, whiskies and other products on its website by the end of the year. The firm is still to decide when it will include the information on product labels.

Asahi Breweries will show the amount of alcohol in grams for its main products on its website from end of March, and plans to specify the amount on product labels as well in the future.

Kirin Brewery Co. will begin displaying alcohol in grams by 2024, and implement such labelling on almost all of its canned beer and Chuhai products by 2027.

Sapporo Breweries is to release the information on its website around mid 2021, and will print the figures on product labels by 2025.
