Italian sparkling wine Prosecco’s export to China increased by 117 percent in value in 2021, after China’s trademark office ruled that Italian Prosecco should enjoy geographical indication (G.I.) status in China.
According to Italian publication Italia a Tavola, Prosecco’s global exports increased substantially in 2021 due to the so-called "revenge spending" following the restrictions seen during the global pandemic.
Export of Prosecco to the USA grew 43 percent in 2021, to Canada increased by 23 percent, to Switzerland up 11 percent and to Japan grew by 5 percent.
China’s trademark office recently ruled that Italian Prosecco should enjoy G.I. status and should be protected in China, despite opposition from the Australian wine industry which also produces a wine called Prosecco.
The Italian Prosecco DOC Consortium started the G.I. application in China back in 2014, they hailed the ruling that came at the end of last year as a victory and an important international recognition.
Objections to the consortium’s application were lodged by Australian Grape and Wine, which represents Australia’s wine growers, on grounds that Australian wineries have been making Prosecco wines from the Prosecco grapes since 1990s before the Italian Prosecco DOC was established in 2009.
While praising the export success of Prosecco, Paolo Castelletti, President of Italian Wines Union, also warned of the risks in 2022.
"It will be necessary to pay attention to 2022, which is showing signs of danger that should not be underestimated," Castelletti said.
"Starting with the high prices caused by the escalation of energy costs to the attack on wine from the health front," he added.
