PROWEIN DUSSELDORF RESCHEDULED TO 15-17 MAY FROM LATE MARCH

The German organiser of the Prowein Düsseldorf show, Messe Düsseldorf, has announced that this year’s show will be rescheduled to 15 to 17 May from 27 to 29 March.

In explaining the decision, Messe Düsseldorf said “the currently very dynamic infection patterns and the rapid spread of the Omicron variant” is a major consideration and the new date will “give the biggest prospects of success for this year’s show”.

“Together with the partners and associations involved, we regard early summer as the ideal period for this. We not only expect infection patterns to calm down but also more people to be able to enter the country and take part. This means exhibiting companies as well as visitors can do their business in an environment that is clearly less affected by Covid-19,” said Wolfram N. Diener, CEO of Messe Düsseldorf.

Stephan Keller, Lord Mayor of the North Rhine Westphalian capital Düsseldorf and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Messe Düsseldorf, said he currently tightened pandemic situation does not allow for sufficient planning security.

“Therefore, postponing the trade fairs to early summer makes most sense for all parties involved. Based on the experience of the past two pandemic years and the assessment of virologists, we then assume that the situation will improve considerably and that the trade fairs will be able to develop their positive effect much more strongly," said Keller.

Prowein Düsseldorf is arguably the world’s biggest annual wine show, but the organiser had cancelled the event in the the past two years because of the COVID pandemic.

Despite that Messe Düsseldorf had repeatedly cancelled its Düsseldorf flagship show, it managed to stage the Hong Kong and Shanghai shows in 2021, and had successfully launched the first Mumbai show in November.

It appears that Messe Düsseldorf is not offering exhibitors compensation for any costs incurred due to the postponement of ProWein Düsseldorf this year.

According to the company’s website, if an exhibitor cannot attend on the new date, “Messe Düsseldorf will try to rent the space rented to the exhibitor to someone else in order to minimize the costs for the exhibitor. At best, the exhibitor will then only have to pay 25% of the participation fee. If it is not possible to rent the space to another party, the exhibitor will be charged the agreed participation fee.”

Complaints are expected from exhibitors who had also committed to take part in the London Wine Fair, because the new Prowein Düsseldorf date clashes with the London show which is scheduled to be held on 16 to 18 May 2022.
