The area under wine grape cultivation in India’s Nashik wine region is expected to increase by almost 17 percent to 7,000 acres (2834 hectares) due to an increase in the sales of wine across the country, Times of India reported.

Wineries in the region are expecting 15 to 20 percent growth in wine sales after the pandemic and are planning to expand vine cultivation to meet the demand.

At present, some 6,000 acre of farm land in Nashik district is planted with wine grapes.

Times of India said the Nashik-based Sula Vineyards, the largest in the country, is planning to add 700 acre. The winery currently has more than 3,000 acre of wine grapes.

It was said that other small wineries in Nashik are planning to add a further 300 acre. The grape yield in the area is approximately 8 tonne per acre.

“We are expecting 15 to 20 percent growth in the sales of grape wine in the domestic markets since the beginning of the current financial year. Considering 20 percent year-on-year growth in wine sales, the requirement of wine grapes is also expected to increase,” Sanjiv Paithankar, Secretary of the All-India Wine Producers’ Association, told Times of India.

“Some wineries have already started planning the increase in area under plantation through contract farming,” Paithankar said.

There are 95 wineries in India, among them 77 are in Maharashtra state where Nashik wine region situates. In Nashik alone, there are 39 wineries.

Maharashtra state accounts for almost 90 percent of India’s grape wine production, while Nashik contributes 80 percent of total production.

There are about 9,000 acres of wine grape cultivation across Maharashtra state, including 6,000 acres in the Nashik district.
