Singapore’s national water agency has turned sewage into a blonde ale called NewBrew and advertised it as the greenest beer.

Produced in partner with local craft brewer Brewerkz, 95 percent of the water used in making NewBrew is NEWater, a purified liquid made from sewage which has been one of Singapore’s strategies to face its water scarcity challenges in the past 20 years.

Brewerkz describes the beer as a modern blonde ale with a distinct fragrance that leaves a smooth, toasted honey-like aftertaste, and said it is a highly quaffable beer that is perfect for Singapore's tropical climate.

The water agency claims that NewBrew is one of the greenest beers. It also lists NEWater as a main ingredient in an attempt to raise awareness of water scarcity in Singapore.

While it might sound unhygienic, NEWater is heavily tested and monitored before being approved by consumption.

NEWater is mainly used in microchip manufacturing plants which requires high quality purified water and for cooling systems in buildings. But in dry seasons, it will also be pumped into household taps.

Recycled sewage can now meet 40 percent of Singapore's water demand, a figure that is expected to rise to 55 percent by 2060, according to the water agency.

Tan Wee Han, owner of Brewerkz who is responsible for brewing NewBrew, said: "Newbrew is a showcase of the high quality of Newater and is proof that sustainability can be delicious.”

NewBrew actually made its debut in 2018, when it was launched by the water agency and Brewerkz to mark the 10th anniversary of Singapore International Water Week. The beer was served during the conference but was not commercially available then.

Beer lovers in Singapore can now buy NewBrew before end of July at supermarket chains FairPrice and Cold Storage, as well as on online platforms and via Brewerkz's restaurants and e-store.

The beer is being sold in packs of three cans, priced at SGD4.50 (USD3.28) per can.
