A 2019 Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs, a 2020 Ferdinand Albariño from Lodi and a 2020 Januik Merlot from Columbia Valley were served at yesterday’s White House state dinner honouring South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife.

The Blanc de Blancs of Schramsberg Vineyards, in Napa Valley, gained international recognition in 1972 when a 1969 vintage of the wine was toasted by President Nixon at the historic “Toast of Peace” to the then Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai.

According to Schramsberg’s website, the 2019 Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs has a dry and crisp style with a suggested retail price of USD42.

The wine can be enjoyed by itself as an apéritif, it said, and is also perfect with fresh oysters and other shellfish, crab cakes, ceviche and grilled sea bass.

The US first lady unveiled the menu for the state dinner on Monday, it was jointly created by White House chefs and Korean American celebrity chef Edward Lee.

The menu includes a crab cake appetizer, braised beef short ribs topped with sorghum-glazed carrots atop a dollop of grits for the main course, and a deconstructed banana split made of lemon bar ice cream, caramelized bananas, fresh berries, a mint gingersnap cookie crumble and a drizzle of caramel sauce infused with fermented soybean paste.

The 2019 Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs was poured during the dessert course, while the 2020 Ferdinand Albariño was served with the crab cakes, and the 2020 Januik Merlot was served with the main course.

“We’re obviously thrilled to play our small part,” said Schramsberg President Hugh Davies, whose parents Jack and Jamie Davies revived the historic property that Schramsberg sits on and utilize traditional techniques to make their sparkling wines.

Last December, President Biden hosted a White House state dinner to French President Emmanuel Macron, who is a well known connoisseur of fine wines.

President Macron was served a 2019 Anakota Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, a 2018 Newton Chardonnay from Napa Valley and a Roederer Estate Brut Rosé N.V. from Mendocino.

Among them, the 2019 Anakota Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was the highlight with a recommended retail price of USD75.
