South Korea's customs data showed that whisky imports increased by nearly 80 percent in the first quarter of this year, as the cocktail highballs became very popular among young Koreans.

The volume of imported whisky amounts to 8,443 tons between January to March, up 78.2 percent from a year earlier, according to the data from the South Korean Customs Service.

This is the highest first-quarter number since data collection began in 2000. It broke the largest quarterly record of 8,625 tons posted in the quarter before.

By value, the imports were USD64.77 million in the first quarter, up 24 percent from a year earlier.

South Korea's whisky imports have been rising rapidly in recent quarters. Industry sources said this is due to the ever-increasing popularity of highballs cocktail which mixed mid-to-low-priced whisky with soda water and ice.

They also predicted that whisky imports will trend higher in South Korea in the near future, as the popularity of highballs cocktail is still on the rise.
