SEOUL: KOREAN STICKY RICE WINE WAS SERVED IN DINNER TO WELCOME JAPANESE PM

South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol served a traditional sticky rice wine to visiting Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during an official dinner at the presidential residence yesterday.

According to the presidential office, Yoon and his wife hosted Kishida and his wife at the presidential residence after a summit meeting in which the Japanese first couple was treated to traditional Korean food and drink.

A total of eight Korean delicacies, along with side dishes were served. Among the main dishes were "gujeolpan" - a platter of nine delicacies; "galbijjim" - braised beef short ribs; "bulgogi" - Korean barbequed beef and "naengmyeon" - cold noodle.

The food was paired with "Gyeongju Beopju," a clear rice wine made from sticky rice blended with malt. The drink is one of South Korea’s national intangible cultural heritages, it has a sweet taste with hint of acidity with an alcohol level of 16 to 18 percent.

Desserts were "hangwa" – traditional Korean confectionaries; and "sikhye" – a sweet rice punch.

The Japanese prime minister arrived in Seoul yesterday for a two-day visit, to reciprocate Yoon's visit to Tokyo in March.

The two held a summit meeting yesterday afternoon, during which they pledged to strengthen cooperation in security, economy, people-to-people ties and their response to global challenges.

They shared glasses of beer to start, Yoon then suggested they add Soju, the traditional Korean distilled liquor, to the mix as a symbol of harmony.

The pair also tasted a Japanese sweet potato liquor to wrap up the evening of food and drinks.
