When Japanese sake producers are struggle to sell sake in their domestic market, a manufacturer is selling sake made in the USA to Japan.
Asahi Shuzo Co, based in Yamaguchi prefecture, has launched New York-made Dassai Blue in Japan.
The company opened its first overseas brewery in New York last year as part of its efforts to expand sales.
Two versions of Dassai Blue are available in selected shops in Japan. A 720ml bottle made with rice polished down to 50 percent of the original grain size is priced at ¥3,800 (USD24.4); another bottle using rice polished down to 23 percent is priced at ¥10,000.
“We only make Junmai Dai-ginjo, even if the cost is high, using the best ingredients for a truly delicious sake. This is also true for the Dassai Blue sake brewery in New York. We would like to introduce Dassai Blue to Japan as proof of our commitment to good sake," said Hiroshi Sakurai, chairman of Asahi Shuzo Co, on the launch of Dassai Blue in Japan.
High-grade Yamadanishiki sake rice, grown in Japan, is used to brew the product, which has 14 percent alcohol, slightly lower than the company’s other sake and about the same as wine. As a result, the sake has a light, sweet flavour.
The product has been available at restaurants and in liquor stores in USA since last September.
