This year's first shipment of Beaujolais Nouveau wine has arrived at Tokyo's Haneda and Osaka’s Kansai airports last week.
Japanese media quoted a spokesman from Suntory's wine division as saying that the Japanese drinks giant plans to import about 457,000 bottles or 342,000 litres of Beaujolais Nouveau this year, representing a 17 percent increase from last year.
Suntory has received the first shipment of 2,640 bottles last week, further shipments will arrive over the next two weeks ahead of the Beaujolais Nouveau day on 21 November.
Retail price of this year’s Beaujolais Nouveau is expected at ¥3,256 (USD21) per 750ml bottle, same price as last year.
The third Thursday in November traditionally marks the official debut of the new season's Beaujolais around the world.
Japanese consumers have a penchant for this light red wine and will hold midnight parties to uncork the new wine.
Japan has long been the biggest export market for Beaujolais Nouveau wines, more than 12.5 million bottles were sold in 2004 at its peak.
The wine’s popularity in Japan has dissipated in recent years, but the uncorking of Beaujolais Nouveau still attracts media attention every year.
