Resigned Suntory Holdings CEO Niinami Takeshi may also lose his role as chairman of Japan Association of Corporate Executives (JACE) due to a police investigation involving supplements deemed illegal in Japan.
JACE said directors on its membership review committee will consult independent lawyers on the matter. They aim at making a decision on Niinami’s future by the end of the month.
Niinami resigned as chair of drinks giant Suntory Holdings this week over allegations he purchased CBD supplements that may have contained an illegal substance.
Addressing a news conference on Wednesday, he said, "I want to apologize for the trouble I've caused everyone." He added: "I didn't break the law, and I think I'm innocent."
Niinami said that for now, he'll step away from his duties at the business lobby. Senior Vice Chairperson Iwai Mutsuo will act on his behalf.
The outspoken business leader has often made waves for his blunt remarks.
The scandal is a setback for the association, which is already dealing with tariff talks and wage hikes.
