INDIAN AUTHORITIES ORDER NATIONWIDE LIQUOR AGE STATEMENT AUDIT

India’s food safety regulator has mandated all alcohol manufacturers and importers to complete full product label audits ahead of the upcoming August festive period, as part of a sweeping national crackdown on misleading labelling and fraudulent age statements across the spirits industry.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) intensified enforcement ahead of the season’s peak gifting and consumption demand, targeting widespread packaging non-compliance, unapproved additives and deceptive ageing claims that have distorted market transparency.

The central violation under scrutiny is improper age declaration on whiskies, brandies and blended spirits.

Under Indian regulations, a bottle’s stated age must correspond to the youngest matured spirit in the blend.

Recent nationwide inspections found multiple brands exploiting loopholes by referencing their oldest cask stock or using ambiguous “well-aged” marketing language to mislead consumers and justify higher pricing.

Regulators have also clamped down on synthetic flavour additives in malt whisky, rum and gin, confirming that artificial enhancements are prohibited for premium spirit categories.

Additional breaches include incomplete disclosure of ABV levels, batch origins and legally required health warnings with non-compliant font sizing.

FSSAI has issued show-cause notices to defaulting producers, granting 14 working days for corrective revisions and full removal of non-compliant stock.

Entities failing to rectify violations face penalties of up to INR 1 million (USD10,400), temporary production suspension and confiscation of mislabelled inventory.

The Confederat1ion of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies confirmed upcoming industry consultations with FSSAI to address compliance challenges.

While the sector endorses standardised labelling rules for fair market practice, it anticipates short-term cost pressures from packaging redesigns, particularly affecting small-batch distilleries and foreign importers.

Industry analysts say the crackdown will formalise India’s fast-expanding premium spirits market, where verified age statements heavily influence consumer trust, gifting trends and product valuation. FSSAI will continue random retail and factory spot checks to sustain enforcement throughout the festive season.
