HIBIKI 12YO MAKES HISTORIC COMEBACK AFTER 11-YEAR HIATUS

Suntory’s iconic Hibiki 12-Year-Old Japanese blended whisky is returning after an 11-year absence, making its comeback as a global travel retail (GTR) exclusive starting 1 June 2026.

The highly anticipated return follows severe stock shortages that forced the brand’s discontinuation in 2015, amid surging global demand for aged Japanese whiskies.

Crafted by fifth-generation Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo, the new expression reinterprets Hibiki’s original vision, blending malt and grain whiskies from Suntory’s Yamazaki, Hakushu and Chita distilleries.

Matured in American oak, Spanish oak, and rare Japanese Mizunara oak casks, the 43 percent ABV blend delivers a harmonious profile of pineapple, plum, honey and subtle sandalwood, with hints of apricot and caramel on the palate.

The whisky’s iconic 24-faceted bottle—symbolising Japan’s 24 microseasons—returns with updated packaging inspired by Kacho-Fugetsu, the classical Japanese concept celebrating nature through flowers, birds, wind and moon.

A circular Marumado motif, referencing traditional Japanese architecture, adorns the box, emphasising the brand’s connection to Japanese craftsmanship.

The launch kicked off in May at Dubai International Airport’s duty-free stores, with a global rollout planned for 1 June at key hubs including Singapore Changi, New York JFK, London Heathrow and Hong Kong International Airport.

Priced at USD188, the limited-edition release is Suntory’s first aged Hibiki expression created exclusively for travel retail, responding to strong consumer and retail demand for the brand in the channel.

Industry analysts note the comeback underscores the recovery of Japan’s aged whisky stocks after years of shortages.

Old bottles of Hibiki 12-Year-Old have fetched up to €1,000 (USD1164) on the secondary market, reflecting its cult status among collectors and enthusiasts.

“This launch is our answer to years of consumer demand for a beloved expression,” said Ashish Sagar, Suntory’s Interim General Manager for GTR. “It showcases Japanese craftsmanship and the unique harmony of flavors that defines Hibiki.”

As global travel rebounds, the Hibiki 12-Year-Old Travel Exclusive is poised to become a coveted item for whisky lovers and travellers alike, marking a significant milestone in the revival of Japan’s iconic aged whisky expressions.
