Long-standing South Korean pharmaceutical company Kyung Nam Pharm is expanding into the domestic wine and spirits market, launching liquor import, export and distribution operations as part of a major diversification push.
Established in 1957 and best known for its iconic Lemona vitamin product line, the Seoul-based over-the-counter pharmaceutical firm has formally expandded its corporate business scope to include alcohol trading.
The move was approved at a recent shareholder meeting, clearing regulatory ground for official licensing procedures.
To fund the new venture, Kyung Nam Pharm plans a KRW19 billion (USD12.54 million) capital raise via rights offering.
Company proceeds will finance licensing procedures, market entry infrastructure and brand development for its upcoming alcohol business segment.
Industry observers frame the diversification as a strategic response to intensifying competition and slowing growth in Korea’s mature pharmaceutical and health supplement markets.
By entering the alcoholic beverage sector, the company aims at securing new revenue drivers beyond its core healthcare portfolio.
Leveraging its nationwide retail distribution network built over decades of consumer health product sales, Kyung Nam Pharm intends to rapidly scale imported wine and premium spirits distribution across domestic channels.
While specific product categories and supplier partnerships remain unconfirmed, the firm will complete official liquor licensing applications in the second half of 2026, with market entry targeted for early 2027.
