Premium Ningxia wines and Chinese baijiu are gaining popularity in Singapore and Malaysia, fuelled by cultural ties, Southeast Asia’s premium beverage trend and expanded cross-border trade.
The Wine Chronicle has learned from trade sources attending the 2026 Chengdu Spring Sugar & Wine Fair that Ningxia wine exports to Singapore rose 42 percent between June 2024 and May 2025, with premium Cabernet Sauvignon and Marselan surging a whopping 60 percent.
On the other hand, Chinese baijiu’s export value to Singapore jumped 40 percent year-on-year in 2025, accounting for 12 percent of China’s global baijiu exports.
The premium baijiu segment led by Kweichow Moutai, Wuliangye and Luzhou Laojiao grew even faster, at 55 percenet, boosted by zero import tariffs and demand from high-end venues and cultural events.
Local cocktail innovations have also drawn younger, diverse drinkers to the spirit.
Malaysia’s baijiu retail sales climbed 32 percent in 2025, with low-alcohol baijiu soaring 50 percent due to demand from young consumers .
Ningxia wine exports to Malaysia grew 38 percent last year, as Malaysian importers sealed RMB9 million (USD1.3m) worth of supply deals with Ningxia wineries in Chengdu.
Driving the growth is Southeast Asia’s shift to premium beverages, alongside streamlined cross-border trade under China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
“Singapore and Malaysia are key gateways to ASEAN,” said a Chinese wine and spirits export executive. “We will expand local outreach to capitalise on this growing consumer demand for Chinese premium beverages.”
