Christie’s marked the 60th anniversary of its Wine & Spirits department with the landmark live auction The Cellar of the Hon. Henry Tang in Hong Kong, delivering a perfect white-glove result.
All 860 lots found buyers, with a total hammer price of HKD50.2 million (USD6.395m), vastly exceeding the aggregate high pre-sale estimate.
Numerous headline lots hammered well above their top estimates, demonstrating fierce international competition for wines from Tang’s meticulously preserved five-decade private cellar.
Bidding drew collectors across Asia, Europe and North America, with a strong showing from younger-generation wine enthusiasts.
The top lot of the sale was a magnum of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti 1971, which sold for HKD875,000, 298 percent above its high estimate of HKD294,000.
Results of other iconic lots:
- A magnum of Henri Jayer Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux 1996 fetched HKD620,000, 238 percenet over its high estimate of HKD260,000.
- A magnum of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti 1995 achieved HKD510,000, 232 percent above the upper estimate of HKD220,000.
- A jeroboam of Château Pétrus 1990 hammered at HKD345,000, 246 percent higher than its high estimate of HKD140,000.
- A case of 12 bottles of Château Laflleur 1982 sold for HKD82,000, 234 percent above its top estimate of HKD35,000.
Tang, former Secretary for Administration of Hong Kong and a pivotal advocate for Hong Kong’s zero wine duty policy, reflected on the results. “I have spent more than 50 years assembling this cellar. Wine is meant to be enjoyed and shared, and I am thrilled these bottles will pass to new custodians who will appreciate them.”
Adam Bilbey, Christie’s Global Head of Wines & Spirits, noted the strength of provenance was the core driver of the premium results. “This collection stands as one of Asia’s most distinguished private cellars. The consistent over-performance against high estimates underscores global collectors’ willingness to pay a premium for impeccably stored, fully documented wines assembled with decades of connoisseurship.”
The auction anchored Christie’s Hong Kong autumn luxury calendar, reinforcing Hong Kong’s position as Asia’s dominant marketplace for rare fine wine.
