Christie’s Hong Kong will host an auction for Henry Tang’s cellar, a landmark single owner live auction scheduled for 10 October at the auction house’s Asia Pacific headquarters, kicking off global celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of Christie’s Wines & Spirits department.
The dedicated sale gathers more than 800 lots assembled over five decades by Henry Tang, former Chief Secretary for Administration of Hong Kong and one of Asia’s most respected fine wine connoisseurs.
Tang is widely credited with supporting Hong Kong’s zero duty wine policy, a pivotal reform that cemented the city’s status as Asia’s premier fine wine trading and collecting hub.
Spanning legendary wine growing territories across Europe and the New World, the catalogue shines with sought after Burgundy and Bordeaux trophies.
Top tier highlights include rare releases from Domaine de la Romanée‑Conti, cuvées by late master Henri Jayer, complete runs of Bordeaux First Growths, Pétrus, Lafleur and Le Pin.
Curated selections of premium Champagne, iconic Californian Cabernet, Italian Super Tuscans and standout Australian fine wines complete the far‑reaching collection.
“After more than 50 years collecting fine wine, I have come to understand that wine’s greatest value lies in being shared,” Henry Tang commented in an official Christie’s statement.
“This cellar carries decades of passion, and friendships forged with winemakers around the globe. This anniversary moment gives me the chance to pass part of this journey on to fellow lovers of wine across Asia and beyond.”
This commemorative auction echoes Christie’s historic first standalone wine sale held in London on 11 October 1966, the event that established the world’s first specialist auction department for fine wine and laid the groundwork for today’s global secondary wine market.
More 60th anniversary wine auctions will follow later this year in New York and London, according to Christie’s global wine division.
Pre‑sale public viewings for Tang’s cellar will open in Hong Kong from 1 October, allowing trade professionals, collectors and wine enthusiasts to inspect bottles ahead of bidding.
While Christie’s has released individual estimates for headline lots, the auction house has yet to publish an overall pre‑sale valuation for the entire 800-lot offering.
Industry analysts note the auction is poised to draw heavy participation from Greater China collectors, Southeast Asian buyers and international wine investors, as demand for top‑tier Burgundy and Bordeaux stays resilient within Asia’s high‑end fine wine circuit.
