The city of Shanghai will hold the 3rd China International Import Expo (CIIE) and ProWine China 2020 trade shows next month, a much needed sense of normalcy to the trade.

It is reported that more than 500,000 people have registered to attend the CIIE to be held from 5 to 10 November, while hundreds of exhibitors are expected to showcase their wines in ProWine China 2020 to be held from 10 to 12 next month.

Given the global travel restrictions still in place due to COVID-19, most foreign exhibitors will only be represented on-site by local staffs or distributors.

Organised by China’s Ministry of Commerce and the Shanghai Municipal Government, CIIE is the state supported flagship exhibition to showcase China’s economic openness.

Last year’s second edition featured President Xi Jinping clinking glasses with visiting French President Emmanuel Macron in its opening ceremony followed by Macron’s super salesman’s act to promote French wine, cheese and beef.

This year’s CIIE will be much smaller in scale spanning three exhibition halls in Shanghai's National Exhibition and Convention Centre.

The exhibition area for food and agricultural products will draw over 1,000 companies from nearly 100 countries and regions, including many industry leaders and about 30 Fortune-500 enterprises, according to the organiser.

Comparatively, last year’s CIIE had attracted visitors from 181 countries, regions and international organisations. More than 500,000 buyers attended the expo, along with over 3,800 companies including 288 Fortune-500 firms.

It was said that about USD71.13 billion worth of tentative deals were reached for purchases of goods and services last year.

On the same day when this year’s CIIE draws to a close, ProWine China 2020 will open for a 3-day trade show at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre along with the trade fair Food & Hotel China.

Despite the worsening political relations between China and Australia, Wine Australia will take part in the exhibition with 26 producers showcasing 40 wine brands.

According to organiser Messe Düsseldorf, major international exhibitors including the German Wine Institute, Viniportugal, Advantage Austria, Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association as well as Grands Chais de France have already signed up. While leading Chinese producer Great Wall and some Chinese wine-growing regions will also take part.
