MACAU WINE IMPORTS DROPPED 47% IN H1 AMID A SLUMP IN TOURISM

Macau’s wine imports fell by nearly 47 percent to about MOP 245 million (USD30.7m) in the first half of the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according the territory’s public broadcaster Radio Macau.
A Radio Macau report said wine imports in the first six months of 2019 amounted to MOP 460m.
It said that France was the biggest source of imported wines with a market share of 72 percent in the first six months, followed by Australia at market share of 12 percent and Portugal at 6 percent.
The average import price of French wine was MOP 594 per litre, compared to Australian wine at MOP 120 per litre and Portuguese wines at just MOP 34 per litre.
According to the report, imported Portuguese wine worth MOP 13.5m in the first half of the year, a year-on-year decrease of 44.8 per cent. In terms of quantity, the import decreased by 120,000 litres during the period.
A Portuguese colony before 2000, Macau is now a Chinese special administrative region and is the gaming capital for China’s 1.4 billion people.
Although it has a population of only 650,000, the city is by far the world’s biggest gaming centre. The city’s casinos generated USD36.7billion in 2019, compared to USD6.58 generated by those in Las Vegas.
Due to the travel restrictions imposed between Mainland China and Macau, the city has witnessed a slump of over 90% in casino revenues since the outbreak of coronavirus.
Macao confirmed its first COVID-19 case on 22 January. The city has a total of only 46 confirmed coronavirus cases, all of the patients have since been cured and discharged from hospital.
