As the COVID-19 epidemic continues to threaten the Hong Kong community, global auction houses have decided to postpone wine auctions which were scheduled to take place in Hong Kong this spring.

The latest to announce postponements of its Hong Kong auctions is Sotheby’s. The auction house announced today it is postponing its Finest and Rare Wines Spring Auction from April to the week of 6 July.

Sotheby’s said they arrived at the decision after very careful consideration and close monitoring of the impact of the Covid-19 situation and the resulting travel restrictions.

The auction house has relocated the spring auction of Modern and Contemporary art from Hong Kong to New York which will go ahead on 16 April.

The remaining categories - including Finest and Rare Wines, Modern Chinese painting, Southeast Asian art, jewellery and watches – will still be auctioned in Hong Kong but postponed to July.

“Given the nature of the property and collectors in our other categories, we have decided to postpone those auctions until early July when we can safely hold a traveling exhibition across Asia and present our sale week in Hong Kong,” said Kevin Ching, Chief Executive of Sotheby’s in Asia.

Earlier this month, global auction house Christie’s announced that it is postponing its Fine & Rare Wines and Spirits Hong Kong auction originally scheduled in March.

The auction has been reschedule on 29 and 30 May to coincide with the inaugural 20th-century and contemporary art evening sale which has also been postponed from March.

Meanwhile, Bonhams auction house has also decided to reschedule its March sales in Hong Kong though no dates have been announced yet.

In a statement Bonhams said it “regrets any inconvenience, but having assessed the global situation, we want to ensure the optimal conditions for clients”.
