CHINESE BAIJIU: FIRST TASTE OF RETIREMENT FOR ALIBABA’S JACK MA

By David Ma

17-9-2019

After retiring from Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba last Tuesday, the flamboyant founder of the unicorn Jack Ma was spotted tasting scoops of Chinese baijiu ice cream in a video that went viral in China and beyond.

Ma’s encounter with the baijiu flavoured dessert is believed would help promote the spirit category that dominates the Chinese market but is little known outside of China.

Four days after his retirement, Ma visited his company’s annual Taobao Maker Festival in Hangzhou where he was spotted trying out two scoops of baijiu-flavored ice cream.

It was not sure if he actually enjoyed the taste of the ice cream, though the stand owner claimed that he thought it was okay.

Ma has said earlier that he would spend time on education that was his first career and would try his hands in winemaking.

The Alibaba founder has in recent years found interests in wines and has since acquired three Bordeaux wineries, these are Château de Sours, Chateau Guerry and Chateau Perenne.

Ma announced his plan to retire last year. He handed Alibaba chairmanship to CEO Daniel Zhang last Tuesday on his 55th birthday and the company’s 20th anniversary party.

The event was marked by a grand spectacle featuring him rocking out on the back of a truck circling around an Olympic-sized sports stadium while being applauded by more than 50,000 employees.
